Knowledge & skills

• Explain the development of the theory of the structure of the atom from Dalton to Bohr.
• Explain the concept of elements and their isotopes.
• Recognise that the first three periods of the periodic table are organized around the first three electron shells of the atom.
• Relate the main group structure of the periodic table to the number of electrons in the outer shell of atoms.
• Use the periodic table to identify groups of chemically similar elements and describe the basis of this grouping.
• Name, give symbols and electronic configurations for the first twenty elements and give their position on the periodic table.
• Draw diagrams of atomic structure.
• Determine electronic configurations of atoms and ions.
• Use atomic and mass number notation to determine the number of protons and neutrons in an element.
