Light - Science Dimensions 3 - Chapter 3
Knowledge & skills
- Understand that refraction is due to light changing speed at the boundary of two different media and be aware of the change relative to the normal.
- Discuss the phenomenon of total internal reflection of light and its uses such as in optic fibres.
- Compare the effects of concave and convex lenses on light and explain how these lenses form images.
- Know that red, green & blue are the primary colours of light and know how these combine to make the secondary colours.
- Describe how white light can be split into its constituent colours.
- Explain the interaction of white light with coloured objects and describe how coloured filters are used.
- Know that cyan, magneta & yellow are the primary colours of inks and know how these combine to make the secondary colours.
- Understand that light is a polarised wave and know the effects of polaroid filters.
- Use a light box to investigate the properties of light.
- Investigate and describe the refraction, dispersion and total internal reflection of light by prisms.
- Observe and construct ray diagrams for refraction by various shaped perspex blocks.
- Find the focal length of a lens.
- Know the structure and functions of the human eye and relate knowledge of lenses and colours to this.
