Books
Texts
The prescribed textbook for Science in 2009 is: Pearson Education Science Dimensions 3 Rickard et al for Year 9 and Pearson Education Science Dimensions 4 Rickard et al for for Year 10 students.
You will have a textbook, homework book and a CD. The CD contains an electronic copy of the
book, so it is recommended that you keep the book at school and the CD at home.
Homework book
Students are required to complete the worksheets contained in the homework book.
It is expected that parents or guardians "sight, sign and date" each worksheet as it is completed. More revision questions (with answers) can be found in a worksheet booklet available from the Science
web site.
Practical work
Details of practical work will generally be obtained from the practical book,
the textbook and the accompanying CD. Extra copies of this booklet are available
from the Science
web site.
Reference texts
There are class sets of Discovering Science - Books 3 & 4 (Heffernan &
Learmonth) in the library and Science Spectrum 3 (Coghill & Wood) and
Science World - books 9 and 10 (Stannard and Williamson) in the Science department.
Books from the class set are available for overnight loan only. These books can be borrowed from the library at the end of the day. Return of these books is the responsibility of the student taking out the loan. Other copies are available for longer loan.
There are also many other books on general science and specific science topics are available from the library. The Science catalogue number starts at 500.
Equipment
Equipment is available for loan for specific Year 9 & 10 science research investigations, however be aware that resources are sometimes used by Science classes and other students. Much useful equipment can be found in your home, the kitchen and garage are often good places to start looking. Scientific tools can often be built from everyday items - 20 cent pieces can be used as weights of constant mass.
Do not leave borrowing of Science equipment to the last minute. Resources are not always available as many students make requests.
Equipment is available for overnight or weekend loan only. The Science equipment loan book must be filled out by the laboratory technician or a Science teacher. Student ID cards must be given as a deposit before borrowing any piece of equipment. Students will be asked to pay the replacement cost if the equipment is damaged, lost or returned late. ID cards will not be returned until this cost is repaid.
Permission must be given before any books or equipment are taken from the Science
block. It should be noted that students who fail to return equipment or
books will pay replacement cost of all items borrowed.
