The setting of The Quiet American is Vietnam in the early 1950s. The action takes place in Fowler’s rooms, in the streets, buildings and canals of Saigon, and in a number of locations within the ‘war zone’.

On a map of Vietnam find these places:
• Hanoi
• Saigon
• Tay Ninh
• Phat Diem
• The Red River Delta
• Haiphong
2 Make a list of all the settings in the novel. Carefully consider how each setting is described and used by Greene.
3 For each setting, explain its significance (e.g. consider how different settings develop the plot, what they reveal about the characters and they relate to themes of the novel).
4 How does Greene’s descriptions of settings reveal his attitudes towards
(a) Vietnam
(b) the war
