Work Experience

Year 10 students are aware that the time for work experience is fast approaching and therefore arrangements need to be made now.  A few tips for arranging your work experience are: list your preferences first and then make contact with

possible employers by telephone using the telephone flowchart (available in T39 if you don’t have one).  When you lodge your employer details with me please ensure that all details are filled in and that they are correct. Details such as, postal

address if different to actual address, and type of placement.  Please return your arrangement form in the same state as it was when you received it. (It shouldn’t be dog-eared when I send it to your employer).

Ensure that you have completed a general module safe@work test AND an industry module relevant to where you are going. (This can be done online).  Refer back to your work

experience booklet for extra information and see Ms Burman in room T39 for advice and/or to collect your arrangement forms when they are processed.

International Night of Nights

Thanks to the stellar crowd from the MHS community who made International Night such a great success on 20 August! It was a fantastic night, with the multicultural culinary skills of parents complemented by the enthusiasm and talent of students and teachers.  Everyone enjoyed the entertainment from Liam Hickson on bagpipes; the flamenco, Tamil, Indian and Sinhalese dancers; barbershop singers Brendan Tsui, Callum Dawlings, Reece Budin and Jasper Gore Garner; plus Tyson Jones on sax and Sonny Chua on keyboards.

St John Gill and Jonathon Coad had the sound and lighting

totally under control, and a big crew of wonderful waiters turned on the Melbourne High student charm - Jay Prabhu,  Callum Evans, Rowan Bulpit, Alexander Davis, Ben Allinson, Charlie Allinson, Dhanushan Anandaras, Steven Tran, Phillip Milione, Guido Soares, Jordon Schroder, Tharindu Senanayake, Jonathan Achandran, Tom Clark, An Tran, Lachlan Ryan, Simon Ho, Garyan Tan, Matthew Lai, and Gareth Huang.

Staff members David Rush, Marie Daou, Tony Morrison, Val Nixon, David Smyth, Stephen Huysing, Rosemary Kerr helped with preparations and publicity.

Interschool Debating

Octo-finals - DAV Schools Competition – Wednesday 31 August

Maintaining a Strong Hold

Wednesday night at Ivanhoe GGS saw the running of the Octo-finals for the DAV Schools Competition.  Four MHS teams, one at each Grade faced the challenge of yet another round of debating, for some the fourth in as many weeks.  In a mixed result, the C and D Grade teams both suffered two point losses to their adversaries however, the A and B Grade teams convincingly defeated their opposition with strong two point wins to both teams.  Best Speakers were awarded to Dhruv Pal, Kiran Iyer, Shantanu Joglekar and Simon Bruckard.

Congratulations to Nabil Hussain, Jack Liao and Simon Bruckard (D Grade – MHS 5) and Jesse Heath, Nicholas Venables, Alex Finkel and Benjamin Lee (C Grade – MHS 6), on progressing to the Octo-finals.  To do so at C and D Grade is testament to their capabilities and indicative of likely success with debating in the years ahead.

We also wish the remaining teams the best of luck with their Secret Topics and draws for the Quarter Finals which will be held next Wednesday evening, 7 September at Kilvington Girls Grammar School, 2 Laila Rd, Ormond (B Grade – 7pm; A Grade – 8pm).  All parents and friends are encouraged to come along and support the debaters as members of the audience.
