MATHEMATICS FACULTY: USE OF TI-89 Titanium CAS CALCULATORS IN 2006
VCAA have announced changes to the type of graphics calculators students may use from 2006 (see VCAA Bulletin July 2005 on the VCAA website). At MHS the TI-89T will be the preferred calculator in all VCE courses from 2007. The faculty has a very limited number of TI-89T graphic calculators for sale. Students who pay $175.00 to the General Office and then bring their receipt to Mr Dovey in T5 will have one reserved for them (while stocks last).
MHS has decided to introduce the TI-89T calculator according to the following schedule. Please note the superseded TI-89 graphics calculator is an acceptable alternative. The functions are the same but there is more memory on the TI-89T.
In 2005: Year 9 students are allowed to use the TI-89T graphics calculator from now on. Hence the faculty recommends Year 9 students purchase the TI-89T rather than the TI-84 or TI-84 plus. If your son already has either of these earlier models there is no compulsion to purchase one immediately but the faculty will assume he has one for Year 10 in 2006. All other year levels will continue to use their existing graphics calculators for the remainder of 2005. If your son is not a Year 9 student and he does not currently have a graphics calculator but intends to purchase one before the end of the year you should contact Mr Ian Bull (Phone 9823 7141 or e-mail bulli@mhs.vic.edu.au) for advice.
In 2006: Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 students will use the TI-89T Year 12 Mathematical Methods (non CAS course) will continue to use the existing graphics calculators: any of the TI-83 or TI-84 models. Year 12 Specialist Mathematics will continue to use their existing graphics calculators but students may, if they choose, use the TI-89T. The faculty believes students may be advantaged by having the TI-89T. Year 12 Further Mathematics will continue to use their existing graphics calculators but students may choose to use the TI-89T. The faculty believes students will not be disadvantaged by using their existing graphics calculator.
In 2007: All students at MHS will be expected to use the TI-89T. Year 12 Mathematical Methods course will switch to the CAS option for the first time.
From 2006 onwards, the use of any type of graphics calculators is no longer allowed in many other VCE subject, including: Accounting, Chemistry, Physics, Information Systems, and VET subjects. See the VCAA Bulletin for July 2005 or check with your sons teachers of other subjects. |

INTERMEDIATE BADMINTON TEAM STATE CHAMPIONS On Wednesday 17 August, the Intermediate Badminton team competed in the VSSSA State Finals at MSAC. After defeating Sunbury, Kurnai and Shepparton in the Round Robin without much trouble, MHS proceeded to the Semi-Finals and defeated Heatherhill 4v0 in the singles in record time. After a long wait, MHS played Sunbury again in the Final and comfortably won 6v0. Congratulations go to the Year 10’s, Sam Ho (Captain), Calvin Gan, Jin Xing Ling, Terence, Andrew Chiu and Ben Lee as this is the first time the Intermediate Team as won the State Championships.
SENIOR BADMINTON TEAM STATE SEMI FINALISTS On Friday 19 August, the Senior Badminton team competed in the VSSSA State Finals at MSAC. Having been drawn in the more favourable Pool, MHS defeated Footscray City, Wonthaggi and Wangaratta comfortably - only dropping 3 games out of 18 to moving to the Semi-Finals. Once again, MHS had to face their regular rival Balwyn, where after a tense struggle in the singles we were eventually defeated 4v2 to finish third in the State. Congratulations go to Adrian Siew(captain), Tim Chau, Andrew McDowell, Keat Ong, Patrick Nguyen and Peter Ling for their efforts this year. |

INTERSCHOOLS TAEKWONDO
On Thursday 25 August, MHS hosted the Victorian Interschool Taekwondo Tournament. Melbourne High School and Trinity College were the only schools to enter teams in this competition. Trinity put forward two teams in the Over 60 kg C Grade division. MHS had six teams in this Division as well as two teams in Under 60 kg B/C Grade and Over 60 B Grade. In the Over 60 kg C Grade Division, Trinity A was decisively eliminated by MHS 1 in the first round (14-8) but Trinity B accounted for MHS 6 (14-6). In the Semi Finals, MHS Others defeated Trinity B (13-6) and MHS 1 defeated the MHS Ultimate Warriors (10-4). This set up a purely MHS Final which saw MHS 1 defeat MHS Others by a margin of only 2 points (18-16). Sean Lont was the high scorer for MHS 1. In the Under 60 kg B/C Grade Division, MHS 3 (Shoban Kandasamy, Jason Ng, Sean Debono and Jason Lai) defeated MHS 4 by a huge 32-5. This was very much a team effort but almost half of MHS 3’s points were scored by Jason Lai (15), who also competed above his weight in the Over 60 kg C Grade for MHS Others. Special mention should be made of Shoban Kandasamy, the only Year 9 Student to compete alongside Year 11 and 12 students. In the Over 60 kg B Grade, MHS 2 took on MHS BBK. This was a high scoring match, which saw some fine fighting, notably from Martin Won and Thilipan Arivalagan for MHS 2 and Jarrod O’Connell for MHS BBK. MHS 2 won this match 36-17. Despite the dearth of schools willing to take on MHS, this tournament provided excellent tournament experience for our boys as well as being a fun day. It is to be hoped that the event will grow in future years to include more schools. Thanks to our coach Mr Rod Black for his preparation of our boys as well as his organizational efforts on the day.
