YEAR 9 AND YEAR 10

At Melbourne High School in Years 9 and 10, core subjects provide a solid foundation for students to pursue any VCE units in Year 11. They cover the eight Key Learning Areas (KLAs) and include the following:

  • The Arts
  • English and English as a Second Language
  • Geography
  • History
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Languages other than English (LOTE)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Technology

In addition to the core subjects, students have the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of elective subjects. The years 9 & 10 elective programme is designed to enhance and broaden students’ knowledge and skills before specialisation occurs at year 11 and continues thereafter. Students are, therefore, encouraged to select electives that are not associated with career intentions; rather, choices should be made on the basis of enrichment and breadth.

Two general electives:

  • Discovering Democracy
  • Media
  • Philosophy,

  • Software Design
  • Theatre Studies
  • Visual Communication and Design,

Year 10 electives

A wide selection of VCE units 1 & 2 electives, as well as general electives, are available for year 10 students. Students do 4 semester length electives in year 10.
