ENRICHMENT

Melbourne High School’s curriculum is based on the expectation that its students will:

  • be challenged through a broad education
  • experience a stimulating, supportive and competitive environment
  • undertake a rigorous programme directed to the development of students’ knowledge and skills for further study
  • receive a wide range of enrichment opportunities covering a variety of learning areas
  • be given the opportunity to excel at their own level of ability

The School favours breadth of learning rather than acceleration programmes. This view is balanced with a pragmatic understanding that students must be given the opportunity to optimise their Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER).

At Years 9 & 10, the core subjects provide a solid foundation for students to pursue any VCE units in Year 11. The core subjects include: English, Mathematics, LOTE, Geography, History, Science, Physical Education, along with Singing, Assemblies and Sport, and collectively offer a sound basis of knowledge and skills that enhance student development. Each subject is expected to contain an enrichment component.

As well, a wide selection of electives is available for Years 9 & 10 students. At Year 10, there is the opportunity to undertake some single VCE units 1 & 2 electives. The term ‘elective’ does not imply that these subjects are of less significance than subjects in the core. In all respects, performance in the electives is considered equally with performance in core subjects. All electives, like core subjects, have assessment tasks, including end-of-semester examinations. The Years 9 & 10 elective programme is designed to enhance and broaden students’ knowledge and skills before specialisation occurs at Year 11 and continues thereafter.

The School encourages students in Years 9 & 10 to choose electives that are not associated with career intentions and to avoid over-specialization; rather, choices should be made on the basis of enrichment and breadth. Melbourne High School reaffirms its position on offering a broad, varied, challenging and all-encompassing curriculum.

The enrichment programmes are in the fields of:

  • Music
  • The Arts
