PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME
Welcome. When you visit the various web pages I hope you will see
what makes our School so special and how it has gained the loyalty,
respect and affection of thousands of students and parents and hundreds
of teachers and School personnel.
We are proudly a selective entry state school for boys in Years
9 to 12. We conduct an entrance examination each year for Year 8
boys who wish to apply for the School. We select about 336 boys
from over 1300 applicants.
As a state school, significantly funded by government, we are able
to provide a superb education with an annual average parent contribution
of about $2,000 per student. Most of these funds are used for the
provision of programmes and facilities that are unable to be provided
by many other schools. The support of parents is strongly matched
by that of Old Boys and friends of the School. The School has also
been active in Joint Development Agreements with the MCC (Melbourne
Cricket Club) and in enterprise endeavours such as the South Yarra
Sports Club (owned and operated by the School).
The School is a place where: -
-
boys are well looked after
-
there are many learning options
-
boys are expected to excel
-
boys are encouraged to be themselves
-
nonconformity of thought and intellect is encouraged within
an environment of rigorous, and sometimes frenetic, application
to learning opportunities.
Our School is an exciting place where future leaders, in all areas
of endeavour, have been provided with the stimulating and happy
environment required to enable and encourage them to go on learning
and to show others how to learn. As a student so aptly wrote for
the School Magazine in 1995, Melbourne High School has, “Inherent
School pride, institutional respect for all students, tradition
blended with liberalism”.
