Use the Library
Catalogue to find subject headings that will lead you to useful
information. Remember you are looking for material that gives you an
accurate picture of the Australian world at that time as well as the
war itself. Search by Subject
Use Power Search and choose the Browsing link on the right. A new screen will appear and you can then choose a Subject Specific search. This will give you a list of all the subdivisions of World War, 1914 - 1918 or World War, 1939 -1945, depending on which term you enter.
Eg.
World War.
The search may be narrowed by searching the subject divisions or by
adding more subject words.
Eg. World War, 1914 – 1918 or World War, 1939 – 1945
These subjects can be divided geographically by country eg. Australia,
France, Great Britain.
Eg. World War, 1914 – 1918 - Australia
The subject can be further divided. Words such as Campaigns,
Battles, Sources, Pictorial works, Women, Personal accounts, etc.
can be added.
Eg. World War, 1914-1918 – Australia –
Personal Accounts
Have a look at the list of subject headings on the OPAC to find other
useful ones.

Can be divided chronologically eg. 1901-1918
or 20th century
The subject Victoria – History
Can also be divided chronologically.
Basic Search
:A keyword
search will search for specific terms such as proper names or key terms:
Eg. Propaganda, Great
War or First World War. The
search can be narrowed by entering more words, such as for example Australia
or Women.
Some other examples of possible general words are: Australian
army, Gallipoli, ANZACs, Conscription, home
front.
Power search enables you to restrict the search to specific item types e.g. videorecording or dvd
