Search Engines

Students should check the lists of web sites which are included in the pathfinders on the Curriculum Links page.  These will generally contain a list of useful links which have been checked by your teacher to ensure that they contain information relevant to your topic.

Listed below are some search engines that may assist in finding the information you need.  Please ask for assistance if you are unsure of how to use specific search tools to search the Internet.  Students will be expected to use different search engines or directories to complete some research assignments and to learn how to gain the most information from a search.

Very fast directory and search engine that finds relevant material quickly.  Try the image search - just click on image and type in the key word.

Vivisimo web search. Clusters and organises your searches into logical groupings.  Helps to define and refine your searching techniques.
A metasearch engine with visual display interfaces. When you click on OK, KartOO launches the query to a set of search engines, gathers the results, compiles them and represents them in a series of interactive maps.
An Australian search engine.  Use this for Australian material.
Australian and New Zealand search engine. You may limit your queries for regional content only, do a world wide search, or search by categories.
Called the "smartest way to see the web" this engine features an interesting search interface based on a graphic representation of automatic query expansion.
A fast search engine with a huge database of authoritative sites.
A search engine that also searches other search engines!  All you have to do is type in your question.
Aims to provide a one stop shop to relevant educational resources on the Internet. Sites are evaluated.
This search engine searches other search engines, but has a relevancy rating.
A search engine.  Remember to put a "+" in front of words you want searched and a "-" in front of words you don't want.  Phrases should be in ".."
Many options for defining your searches by using the pull down windows and check boxes. Results are ranked.
A directory where the subject categories are set out for you from more general to more specific.
Searches other engines.  You may be overwhelmed by the number of hits you get!
