NO. 1: ORGANISING FOLDERS

The very first thing you will do is to create a FOLDER on your 'home drive' titled HEROES. Here you will store all your notes within a series of sub-folders as follows:

Planning Sheets — here you will download and store all the sheets from this Site you need to complete
Text Documents — here you will store all your word documents for your scrapbook
Images — here you will store all images you will use to illustrate your scrapbook

NO. 2: MANAGEMENT OF FOLDERS & WORK IN PROGRESS

It is your responsibility to manage and make available (e.g. on flash disk or CD) all folders at all times.
Your work in progress will be closely monitored by your teacher and it is your responsibility to be able to show evidence of your work at anytime when asked.

NO. 3: RESEARCH

Step 1

What makes a hero? Brainstorm the characteristics of a hero using the software program Inspiration. Save your document in the Planning Sheets folder. (Refresher: review Activity 8.1 in English Mosaic 3, ed. O'Donnell. Melbourne: Macmillan Education Australia 2004)

Step 2

1. Research: read about heroes on the internet, literature (fiction and non-fiction), comic books, and view films.

(a) Throughout your study of the Hero and the Quest Narrative (module 8 in English Mosaic 3) you have read and investigated different types of heroes. You will now extend your understanding of the hero and his quest by researching a wider range of heroes from literature, film, comic books and real life.

(b) Use the Internet, reference books, wide reading and films to begin your research. The Resource Page is the place to start. Use the links provided to help you get started on the Internet.

(c) You must find at least five (appropriate) Internet sites and three print sources and view at least two films.

(d) You are to use the Research Sheet to record your references. Cite your references accurately. See the section titled "Bibliographies" in The Active Look It Up! to help you.

(e) A brief annotation for each reference you use is required.

2. Record your research

(f) In the Resource Page you will find Table #1. In this table, you are required to record different types of heroes derived from your research. You must record at least two different types of heroes from each of the following:

  • literature (fiction and non-fiction)
  • films
  • comic books
  • real life

By the end of this process you will have developed a very clear and comprehensive understanding of different types of heroes, their characteristics and qualities, the ways in which they inspire others and their impact on society.

Step 3

(a) Now, you will fine-tune your research. This task will help you focus on developing your own hero. Choose any one of the following categories and research one hero in detail.

  • myth or legend (Refresher: review pages 104 - 109)
  • literature (Refresher: review page 112)
  • film (Refresher: review Activity 8.4)
  • comic books (visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki; and use the search tool e.g. enter: Batman)
  • real life (Refresher: review pages 110 - 111)

(b) Your goal is to find as much information about the hero you have chosen, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Date and Place of BirthFamily, (parents, spouse, children)
  • A chronological account of his or her life
  • Hardships or struggles he or she experienced
  • Major accomplishments/occupation(s)
  • Special events occurring in the world during this person's life
  • Date and Place of Death

(c) As you gather information record it in the Table #2. Be sure to change it into your own words. You may use quotes, but must give credit to your source for the quote. You will be required to include a bibliography citing all the sources you used (see 2 c, d & e above).

NO. 4: CREATING YOUR OWN CHARACTER

Step 4

You are now ready to create your own character and assign him or her key characteristics you want for your hero. Keep in mind the characteristics you have brainstormed and researched. Be creative!

Complete Table #3 (Character Creation Sheet):

  1. record your ideas and plan your hero's story.
  2. on the same page, compose an explanatory statement of approximately 50 words discussing your choice of hero and rationale for the quest you have created.

Step 5

Having completed all steps in The Process, you are now ready to commence your scrapbook.
Return to The Task.
