Comparative analysis of one poet's selected works or of several poets.

A close study of one novel.

Assessment:
Close passage analysis for the development of an interpretation of the novel.

A close study of one play and how it has been adapted and transformed for the screen.

Assessment:
Written analytical comparison of the play with its film adaptation.

The exam assesses students' ability to write sustained interpretations by analysing how the literary features, in one or more passages contribute to an interpretation of the text. The exam is 1 1/4hours in duration. Students complete two different sections on the texts studied during the semester:

Poetry: A plausible interpretation of one poem through close analysis.
Novel or Play: A plausible interpretation of either the novel or the play through close analysis of the language, imagery and ideas and its relationship to the whole text.
