Economics has enormous relevance to those of us who seek to understand
the society in which we live. It is impossible to avoid making contact
with this subject since, along with sport, economics consistently dominates
media headlines.
2. Citizenship
Many economic issues touch on the question of citizenship. Here one
thinks of the various levels of government responsibility, the matter
of foreign investment, the welfare system, the level of defence spending,
the environmental consequences of economic development, the recognition
of native title or the matter of immigration. It is important to have
informed opinion about such topics.
3. Academic skills
More than some school-based subjects, economics is a study that helps
us develop wanted and useful academic skills.
4. Career opportunities
Economics
has application across a variety of careers. The private sector employs
economists in banking, education, journalism, actuarial studies, insurance,
retailing, health, sport, administration and management, and marketing.
The public sector recruits economists for the Reserve Bank, the Treasury
and most government departments including defence, health and trade.
