Introduction

What is justice? The main methods of punishment – imprisonment, corporal punishment and death – have not changed since ancient times, but the practices and legal justifications have differed throughout one society to the next.

As a group you are going to explore the topic "Did the punishment fit the crime?" Each member of your group will become an expert on methods of punishment within their chosen time period or cultural grouping. You will have to come back together to answer the essential question:

Consider the values in the society you are investigating - did the punishments in your chosen time period reflect the values in that society? Do you believe the punishments/sanctions were appropriate for that time?
