What is the Gothic Imagination?

In this unit you will explore the way in which the gothic imagination has been explored in print, non-print and multimodal texts.

You will examine your initial understanding of the gothic from your own experiences in contemporary society. This understanding will act as a starting point for the exploration of the gothic as a concept from its origins in medieval architecture and art, and its revival as an artistic concept in the 18th century. You will then investigate how the gothic imagination has manifested itself throughout various artistic and literary movements and how it continues to influence contemporary literary, artistic and popular culture. From your study of the evolution of the gothic you will create and present a range of three to five written and/or multimodal texts for a specific audience, purpose and context in which you explore your own understanding and visions of the gothic imagination.

This website takes you through each part of the process so that by the time you come to construct your own texts, you should be able to do so with confidence.
