Business
Management, a subject dedicated to educating its students on the ways
of the business world, teaching them how businesses start, operate and
in most cases, succeed.Students emerge from the subject with a comprehensive
knowledge of business principles and a far greater chance of business
success.Melbourne High's students traditionally thrive in this subject,
under the expert tutelage of the business management staff at the school.
The
course involves many different activities, including assessment tasks,
work requirements, computer simulations and practical tasks, all of
which apply the skills and principles students learn in class.
The
major assessment task in Business Management was where students were
required to create and operate their own Small Business.
The
purpose of this work requirement was to assist students to -
Test,
in a practical way, some aspects of their theoretical understanding
of the management of small business; and develop skills in:
-Planning an activity
-Working cooperatively or individually on a business enterprise
-Communication with the market
-Performing a particular business activity
-Evaluating the quality of performance of the planned activity.
Students
responded to this task with many creative and unique ideas such as:
-MHS
VCE Tie
-MHS Dog Tags
-Computer Assembly Courses
-MHS Scarves
-Gardening & Cleaning Services
-MHS Pens
-Yarra River Cruise and many more great business ideas.
The
business must involve in-depth planning, marketing research and a final
report that realistically analyses the performance of the business. The
emphasis of the activity, however, is to gain experience, and all students,
regardless of the success of their business gain this valuable asset
from the activity.Ultimately the task provides us with an insight into
the highs and lows of small business.
